The Momence Gladiolus Festival

Five days of parades, carnival lights, vintage cars and flea-market treasure in a town that grows festivals the way it once grew flowers. The genuine American county festival — and you are warmly invited.

Next festival: early August · confirm exact dates at the official festival site before booking

What this is

In the early twentieth century the sandy soil around Momence made it a centre of commercial gladiolus growing, and in 1938 the town named its summer festival after the flower. It has run ever since: a parade-and-carnival week that belongs to the same American tradition as the county fair, organised by volunteers and attended by everyone.

For a British visitor this is the good stuff: a festival with no entrance fee, no branding agency and no tourist infrastructure, because it was never designed for tourists. You simply show up, line the kerb, and get adopted.

The shape of the week

The pattern has held for decades: the festival builds through the week — coronation of the festival queen on Wednesday, a children’s parade on Thursday, carnival and live music nightly — and peaks at the weekend with the car show and flea market on Saturday, the Grand Parade down Washington Street, and craft and antique markets plus the antique tractor show at Island Park on Sunday.

Why British visitors should care

Because this is the America you have seen in films, performed by no one. Marching bands and fire engines; teenagers waving from floats; funnel cake and lemonade shake-ups; a flea market where a dollar still buys something. It photographs magnificently and remembers itself fondly. Come once and you will start checking flight prices for next August.

Festival survival tips

  • Book a county bed months ahead; refundable rates.
  • Cash for the flea market and carnival.
  • Arrive early for parade kerb space; bring water — August is hot.
  • Sun cream. This is not British sunshine.
  • Let the kids do the carnival; let yourself do the tractor show.

Plan the festival weekend

Getting there & parking

Drive in from your county base; street parking fills near the route on parade day, so park a few blocks out and walk — nothing in Momence is far. Expect closures along Washington Street during parades.

What to photograph

  • Parade detail: hands, instruments, candy throws
  • Carnival lights at blue hour
  • Car-show chrome against brick storefronts
  • The tractor show’s patient owners — ask first, they love it
